Seattle to Fort Worden via the Edmonds/Kingston Ferry

In May of 2023 the Seattle area was having a heat wave. We decided to get out of the house and be closer to the water. When I was younger we used to go to Fort Worden every year and I loved playing on the WWII Bunkers. I thought the kids were at the right age to enjoy them too, so we all went on a day trip there. To get there from where we live, you have to take the Edmonds/Kingston Ferry, and then drive north to the Olympic Peninsula.

Fort Worden is a very cool area, it was part of what was called the “Triangle of Fire” which were forts built to protect the Bremerton Shipyards during WWII. If enemy ships wanted to come down the Puget Sound to attack the ship yards they had to travel through a straight that was protected by the three forts which formed a triangle that could hit ships from all directions. Today they are parks, and you can explore the bunkers and see where the weapons were stored. I really like them because they remind me on similar bunkers built in Alaska that I’ve seen in Kodiak and Unalaska. Because they were built to protect from ships coming down the Puget Sound there are amazing views. They are also a lot of fun to run around, we used to play games like tag or hide and seek, it was always a little exciting because there aren’t any hand rails or anything, so if you fall over an edge it’s gonna hurt. The park also has an amazing beach, it’s the Puget Sound, so the water’s a little cold, but the kids had a blast playing in the sand and surf.
It was a long day, but we succeeded in staying cool, and it was a beautiful sunset on the ferry ride home.
