Chignik Lagoon, Alaska

Chignik Lagoon is a small community located (as the name implies) on the south side of Chignik Lagoon on the Alaska Peninsula. It is only accessible by boat or plane, with a typically short gravel runway. Chignik Lagoon is one of three communities with the name Chignik, it is around the corner from the nearby community of Chignik Bay was one of the communities getting high speed fiberoptic internet service and our company was contracted to monitor the excavation of the trench being dug to lay the cable. I went out there in the summer of 2025 and spent about a week in the community. At the time red salmon were coming in from the ocean and traveling through the lagoon to the Chignik River, so there were thousands of fish that you could see constantly jumping out of the water as they swam through the channel. It was a beautiful place, and like many of the villages on the Alaska Peninsula revolves around commercial fishing.
