King Cove, Alaska

King Cove is my original home town, and most of my family still lives there. It was an amazing place to be a kid in, and I loved every summer I got to commercially fish out there. I was really excited that GCI chose King Cove as one of the communities receiving the Fiber Optic Cable because it meant I got to visit home a couple times in the spring and summer of 2022. The first trip to King Cove was in April. It was still a little chilly, but we were lucky it didn’t blow to hard while we were out there. It was a really quick trip to have a kick off meeting.

When I came back in July I was able to bring Olivia with me and it was a blast! She got to meet all her family and see where I came from so it was a really cool experience. The weather was so nice the whole time we were there. It was nice enough to see the volcanoes of Uninmak Island. Shishaldin Volcano had been smoking right before we got there, and it exploded a little while after we left. There was a lot of activity, a 7.2 earchquake hit when we were there, luckily the family we were staying with were on high ground so we didn’t have to worry about a tidal wave, but the rest of town had to evacuate to high ground until they got the “ok” to come down.

After visiting family in King Cove we took the ferry to Sand Point, which about an 8 hour ferry ride east of King Cove. We also have family in Sand Point, and Sand Point was also one of the communities getting the Fiber Optic, so I also wanted to go out there. Olivia was so excited to take the ferry. It got windy coming across Pavlof Bay, but Olivia loved playing in the wind and didn’t want to come back inside. It was a beautiful ride, and I was really excited to see the places I used to fish in my 20s.
